Indigenous Youth Services - Mental health, physical health and addictions supports

There are services designed to support Indigenous young people. Below are some tools and resources that you might find helpful. These resources include physical and mental health supports, crisis lines and substance use treatment.

Where can I find support for my Physical health?

  • Jordans Principal – Jordans Principal is an organization that works to ensure all First Nations children and youth in Canada can access the products, services and supports they need when they need them. They can help with physical health supports, medical equipment, educational supports, mental health services and more.

  • First Nations Health Authority – Health Benefits – Covers specific health-related items and services to fill gaps where medical or dental needs are not covered by MSP or third-party health insurance. This includes mental health services and medical transportation.
  • First Nations virtual doctor of the day – All First Nations people in BC can access a doctor thought this service. Non-status family members can access this service as well and there are no age limits.
  • First Nations Health Authority App – This is a free mobile app, available for IPhone or Andriod, where you can find information and services available to First Nations people.

Where can I find mental health support?

FNHB offers 3 programs.

  1. Mental wellness and counselling – 22 hours available every 12 months.
  2. Indian Residential School Resolution Health Supports Program – Counselling available to support survivors of residential school and their families. 22 hours available every 12 months.
  3. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and girls Health Support Services – Counselling available to survivors and families – 22 hours available every 12 months.

  • We Matter Campaign – The We Matter Campaign is an Indigenous youth-led organization that aims to connect youth with culture, healing, and mental health supports.
  • Warriors against violence society – Warriors against violence is an organization that aims to prevent and end family violence in Aboriginal communities.

Crisis lines/texts

Provides mental health, emotional and cultural supports to eligible former Indian Residential School students and their families.

  • Hope for Wellness– Online chat counselling service for Indigenous people in Canada.
  • Youth Space –  (online chat) or text 778-783-0177.  Available daily between 6pm and midnight PST.
  • Kids Help Phone – Youth and adults now have the option to connection with First Nations, Metis and Inuit crisis responders.

Text ‘’First Nations’’ ‘’Metis’’ or ‘’Inuit’’ to 686868 (youth) or 741741 (adults).

  • Youth in BC – Chat service available daily from noon to 1:00am.
  • Talk4Healing – A free and culturally safe phone line for Indigenous women. 1-855-554-4325.
  • Metis Crisis line – 1-833-638-4722. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
  • KUU-US crisis line – 250-723-2040 (youth) OR 250-723-4050 (adults). Available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Where can I find addictions supports?

        – Thuy Na Mut First Stage Program (Substance abuse). Click here for program details.

        – Kwunatsustul Second Stage Program (trauma). Click here for program details.

        – Honouring Grief Program. Click here for program details.

  • Residential and outpatient treatment centres –  Treatment centres that are funded through the National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP). Click here to find a treatment centre in your community
  • Harm reduction programs in BC. Click here to find harm reduction services in your community.
  • First Nations virtual substance use and psychiatry services – This service provides individuals with access to specialists in addictions and psychiatry. This is a free referral-based service available to BC First Nations people and their family members, even if those family members are non-status.

  • Substance use – 3:30 – 17:30
  • Nasal Naloxone available at no cost to BC First Nations – Find information on how to access this here.
